Starting November 1, 2024, the NSW Government is rolling out the NSW Solar Battery Rebate under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS). This program is designed to help homes and businesses with rooftop solar boost energy efficiency and cut electricity costs by installing battery storage and connecting to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
Here’s what eligible homes and businesses can receive:
- $1,600 to $2,400 off the installation of a solar battery (depending on size).
- $250 to $400 for connecting your solar battery to a VPP (this can be claimed twice, with a minimum of three years apart).
This rebate will supercharge the adoption of home batteries across NSW, creating a more reliable power grid, reducing fossil fuel dependence during peak demand, and pushing the state closer to its emission reduction goals—70% by 2035 and net zero by 2050.
NSW Solar Battery Rebate: Everything You Need to Know
Upfront Installation Rebate
- Amount : $1,600 to $2,400 (based on battery size)
- Purpose : Lower upfront costs for households and businesses installing batteries, so they can store extra solar power, reduce grid reliance, and use clean energy whenever they need it
Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Connection Incentive
- Amount : $250 to $400 (claimable twice, with a minimum 3-year gap)
- Purpose : Encourages connecting batteries to VPPs, allowing shared energy flow across the grid, improving efficiency, and stabilizing the system for everyone.
Official NSW Battery Scheme Requirements
To be eligible for rebates, equipment must meet these standards:
- 1. Be on the approved product list by the Scheme Administrator.
- 2. Have a usable battery capacity of 2 kWh to 28 kWh.
- 3. Offer a warranty with at least 6 years remaining.
- 4. Warranty must cover:
- 5. Warranty must ensure at least 70% of usable battery capacity is retained 10 years from installation.
This rebate isn't just about saving money—it’s about powering NSW with cleaner energy, creating a more resilient grid, and contributing to the state’s goal of a greener future!
